Playable Characters

A.B.A
First Appearance: Guilty Gear Isuka
An artificially created girl who was never fully completed, A.B.A spent ten years secluded in the mountain villa where she was created. She wields a massive oversized sentient key named Paracelsus, whom she met after venturing out into the world. A.B.A can enable a Moroha mode whereby she becomes more powerful but takes damage when attacking; Double Moroha increases her attack and running speed drastically, but the damage inflicted upon herself is increased, and the time spent in Moroha mode decreases.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Anji Mito
First Appearance: Guilty Gear X
A young and curious Japanese man, he travels the world seeking knowledge about the Gears and 'That Man' for his own reasons. He fights with the magic war fans Zetsusen (Zessen) which is the only known Outrage weapon other then the ones used by Ky and Sol. He fights in a dance-like style and uses some wind and lightning magic. Since there are few Japanese people outside of the Japanese colonies, Anji is also rather fond of Baiken, much to her (projected) annoyance.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Axl Low
First Appearance: Guilty Gear
Originally from the streets of 20th century London's East End, Axl fought his way through the ranks of the various gangs of his neighborhood in order to bring peace to the streets, until he was mysteriously sent nearly 200 years into the future. He now searches for any way he can return home. He fights with a dublu kusari-gama with expert skill and is able to use some fire magic.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Baiken
First Appearance: Guilty Gear
During the Crusades, the nation of Japan was destroyed by the Gears. Following this, those of Japanese descent who still lived were declared cultural treasures and placed in aparte colonies. However, the Gears attacked even these colonies. During one attack, the young Baiken, after watching the death of her parents and losing her right arm and left eye, saw standing among the Gears their creator: "That Man". From that point, she swore revenge, training herself in the use of the katana and dedicated herself to hunting "That Man" down. (Baiken was a hidden character in Guilty Gear but became a normal character in the later installments.) Armed with a katana, she also has many hidden surprise weapons within the sleeve of her severed arm: a Japanese mace, a fireworks cannon, a bladed fan, a chain rope, a hook, a claw, and a spear. How this is accomplished is unknown, but it's assumed to be related to the game's out-of-this-world motif, perhaps involving the common gag known as Hammerspace.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Bridget
First Appearance: Guilty Gear XX
Despite the name and appearance, Bridget is actually a boy. He was born in a village where the birth of twins of the same gender was considered bad luck, and hence his family named and raised him as a girl. When he became older, he decided that he would prove his worth and his masculinity by becoming a bounty hunter. He is given a fake list of bounties by I-No, sending him against many of the other fighters. He fights with a yo-yo and Roger, his mechanical, intelligent, and oversized teddy bear.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Chipp Zanuff
First Appearance: Guilty Gear
A former drug addict and dealer for the mafia, Chipp was marked for death when his addiction got in the way of his duties. It was then that he was taken in by the ninja Tsuyoshi, who trained him in the ways of Ninjutsu. However, Tsuyoshi was murdered, and Chipp swore revenge against the killers. Hotheaded and brash, he fights with a blade on his arm and lightning-fast speed.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Dizzy
First Appearance: Guilty Gear X
The daughter of Justice, Dizzy's appearance in the world became a cause of concern to those in power, fearing another war with the Gears. However, Dizzy has no desire to harm anyone and only wishes to live in peace. She is eventually found by and joins the Jellyfish air pirates. (Dizzy is the boss character in GGX.).

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Dr. Baldhead
First Appearance: Guilty Gear
Once a brilliant and renowned surgeon, Dr. Baldhead tragically lost his mind when a young girl under his care died in surgery. He then became a ruthless and brutal serial killer until his capture, when he was then released to take part in the first tournament. Tall, lanky, and utterly deranged, he fights with a six-foot long oversized scalpel.

Eddie
First Appearance: Guilty Gear XX (Cameo appearance in Guilty Gear X ending)
After fighting Millia, Zato-1 falls to his injuries, and the parasite Eddie takes control of Zato's now decaying body to seek out a new living host to control. Eddie replaces Zato-1 from GGXX onward with regard to both the story and the selectable characters. (The actual reason for the character change is thought to be because Zato-1's voice actor, Kaneto Shiozawa, died of a brain concussion after GGX was made.)

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Fanny
First Appearance: Guilty Gear Petit
A strange nurse with an unusual connection to Dr. Baldhead, Fanny fights her enemies in much the same style as Baldhead, using a syringe that once belonged to her late mother.

Faust
First Appearance: Guilty Gear X
Once a kind and very talented surgeon, Faust became a ruthless murderer after losing a young girl in surgery. After horribly killing scores of people and being imprisoned, Faust was given a second chance after the first tournament. He first decided to atone for his crimes by taking his own life, but he learned that the girl's death was actually caused by a third party. Donning a paper bag on his head and taking his oversized scalpel, Faust seeks out the truth about the girl's death while dedicating himself to saving as many lives as he can. Although there has been no official statement, it is heavily inferred through their similarities that Faust is a reformed Dr. Baldhead.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Holy-Order Sol
First Appearance: Guilty Gear XX/Slash
The past version of Sol Badguy, Order-Sol dons his traditional uniform, as well as a new, yet simplistic, weapon. After defeating Boss I-No, the character will time-travel back to the days of this past Sol, engaging him in battle. With 'new' moves, such as Storm Viper and Gunblaze, which appear to be prototypes to his present attacks, Order-Sol is prepared to engage with any opponent.

I-No
First Appearance: Guilty Gear XX
A mysterious and seductive woman, I-No's goals and motivations are shrouded and hidden except that she works for That Man. She fights with an electric guitar and enjoys speaking with suggestive overtones. (I-No is Guilty Gear XX's boss character.)

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Johnny
First Appearance: Guilty Gear X (though he has a cameo appearance in May's ending in the original Guilty Gear)
A charming and dashing iaidouka and leader of the Jellyfish air pirates, Johnny works outside the law to help others in need. His crew is made of orphans that he has raised himself, including May. He also enjoys shamelessly chasing after women.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Justice
First Appearance: Guilty Gear
The autentic Commander Gear, Justice had the power to control all other Gears, which she used to wage war against the human race. Ultimately she was brought down and exiled to a dimensional prison by the Sacred Order of Holy Knights. However, she was freed by Testament, but was quickly defeated once again, and finally destroyed by Sol Badguy. (Justice is the final boss of Guilty Gear, is absent from Guilty Gear X, except for X:Plus, and returns as a secret character in GGXX.)

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Jam Kuradoberi
First Appearance: Guilty Gear X
A highly talented and spirited martial artist whose true passion is Chinese cooking. She takes up bounty hunting as a means of collecting enough money in order to open her own restaurant, her lifelong dream. Which was acomplished in GGX, when she obtained the from the tournament which took place in the game from Sol. (The official ending of Guilty Gear X)

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Kliff Undersn
First Appearance: Guilty Gear
Former leader of the Holy Knights. He wields the massive sword Dragonslayer with just one hand. He is also an unlockable hidden character in Guilty Gear XX.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Ky Kiske
First Appearance: Guilty Gear
The young, dedicated, and pious chief of the International Police Force, Ky was made head of the Sacred Order of Holy Knights at age 16 and under his leadership, they were able to bring an end to the century long Crusades against the Gears. His dedication to law and order puts him at odds with the free-spirited Sol Badguy, his rival. He fights with the Thunderseal sword and with his lightning magic.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Leopaldon

Leopaldon as seen in Guilty Gear IsukaFirst Appearance: Guilty Gear Isuka
Very little is known about this character, the boss of GG Isuka. An Arcadia article mentions that he is a good man at heart who somehow manages to control a giant Gear, but otherwise little is known about him, his Gear, or his faithful dog. Moreover, some unofficial sources have stated that Leopaldon, or the Gear itself, is female, due to the mark on the Gear's shoulder.

Also known as Laflafion Seen first on level 100

May
First Appearance: Guilty Gear
A young, cute, and spunky member of the Jellyfish air pirates that is utterly dedicated to Johnny, the leader of the pirates and the man who raised her after she was orphaned. She entered the first tournament in order to bail Johnny out of prison, and fights in later tournaments for his benefit. She fights with a massive ship's anchor, which she is able to swing with ease. It is heavily implied that May is Japanese. (In fact if Justice defeats May in GGXX' arcade mode Justice will point out that she is disgusted by the fact there are still Japanese people walking the Earth.)May has an irrational fear of bald people and can sense them from a distance.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Millia Rage
First Appearance: Guilty Gear
Orphaned in the Crusades, she was taken in and raised by the Assassins Guild who trained her to kill, teaching her how to use and control her hair, a creature similar in nature to Zato-1's "Eddie", as a living weapon. However, she did not desire the life of an assassin and escaped when the chance presented itself. She faces down Zato-1 and then Eddie, knowing that she can only be free with his death.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Potemkin
First Appearance: Guilty Gear
A massive slave-soldier of Zepp, a floating continent controlled by a military dictatorship, Potemkin was forced into the first tournament by his superiors. However, during the tournament, the government of Zepp was overthrown in a revolt lead by Gabriel, his mentor. Once Gabriel was made president of Zepp, Potemkin pledged his loyalty to the new government as a special agent. Potemkin likes to draw, but is so strong, he can put four tons of pressure on a pencil with only his fingers.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Robo-Ky
First Appearance: Guilty Gear X
Robo-Ky is not simply one character, but in fact a line of robotic copies of Ky Kiske created by the shadowy Post War Administration Bureau. For some reason, Robo-Ky is often mistaken for the real Ky Kiske and vice versa during the game's story mode, even though his face is obviously metallic, his voice is higher-pitched and robotic, and he constantly blurts out *GIGIGI* or *BZZZT* noises during story sequences.

Revised Appearance: Guilty Gear XX#Reload
In story mode, Robo-Ky functions the same in #Reload as he does in XX, but that's where the similarity ends - the revised Robo-Ky contains an entirely different sprite set and movelist from his XX predecessor. With regard to explaining the existence of Robo-Ky from XX, it is simply assumed that he was an early tip and that the Robo-Ky from #Reload is "the real deal". This also implies that the other characters have never met the Robo-Ky from XX.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Robo-Ky Mk. II
First Appearance: Guilty Gear Isuka
A version of Robo-Ky whose moveset and technical parameters (like attack strength, defense, etc.) can be customized. Unlike the other Robo-Ky, Mk. II is built by and has loyalty to a mysterious scientist, not the Post-War Administration Bureau.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Sol Badguy
First Appearance: Guilty Gear
A lone bounty hunter and former member of the Sacred Order of Holy Knights, Sol has dedicated himself to the extinction of the Gears. At over 150 years old, Sol was involved with the creation of the Gear Project, and he is in fact the prototype Gear. He fights with his sword, Fireseal, and with his fire magic. His real name is Frederick. In Guilty Gear XX Slash, there is another version of Sol called Holy Order Sol.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Slayer
First Appearance: Guilty Gear XX
An ancient vampire who founded the Assassins Guild, he comes out of hiding when the Guild dives into chaos after Zato's disappearance. Cultured and debonair, Slayer enjoys haiku and spends his time with his wife Sharon, another immortal. He also has a personal connection with Gabriel, the president of Zepp, but seems to be acquainted with all of the movers and shakers of the Guilty Gear universe.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Testament
First Appearance: Guilty Gear
One of the few Gears with free will, Testament found himself attempting to return Justice to the world. After the first tournament, he discovered the Gear Dizzy, and dedicated himself to protecting her. Stoic and morose, he fights with a massive scythe made of blood and his unnatural Gear powers. (Up until GGXX, Testament is a sub-boss character that can be unlocked as a playable character. From GGXX on, he is playable without being unlocked.)

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Venom
First Appearance: Guilty Gear X
Another orphan raised by the Assassins Guild, Venom became the devoted right hand of Zato-1 when he came to power. Once Millia began to hunt Zato and the parasite Eddie began taking more control, Venom began his quest to save his beloved master . He fights with his own style using a pool cue and billiard ball summons. Venom also seems to be an enemy of Faust, supported by one of the endings in Guilty Gear: XX.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Zako-dan
First Appearance: Guilty Gear Isuka
Meaning roughly "Lackey Gang" in Japanese, Zako-dan is a mysterious organization added into the console releases of Isuka. These characters seem to be around just for comic relief. Most of them can only use two out of four basic attacks, and one of them lacks the ability to jump, making these characters unpopular with all but the best of players.

Zappa
First Appearance: Guilty Gear XX
A hapless young man who has found himself possessed by a number of angry and vicious spirits, most notably a woman named S-ko who often takes control of his body to attack others. Zappa seeks out Faust in the hopes of finding a cure for his bizarre "condition".

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Zato-1
First Appearance: Guilty Gear
A member of the powerful Assassins Guild, Zato-1 allowed himself to become the host of a symbiotic creature named Eddie in exchange for his sight. Because of this, Zato-1 was able to take control of his shadow, and use it as a weapon to gain great power. With this power, he made himself leader of the Assassins Guild. However, as his body weakened, Eddie was able to take more and more control until Zato-1's death. Zato despises all women, due to past connections with Millia Rage.

Note: The change of name and 'character' may or may not have been the result of Zato-1's original voice actor dying before the release (or possibly production of) Guilty Gear XX.

Non-Playable Characters

April
A member of the Jellyfish air pirates, she is Johnny's first mate and May's best friend.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Raven
One of three servants to That Man. Little is known of him, but he does share some sort of connection with Axl Low which That Man describes as being "parallel existences" of each other. In the Guilty Gear novel "Lightning the Argent", Raven shows unusual battle prowess by essentially ignoring Sol's fire attacks, via regeneration, and beating Faust in an interdimensional battle. Raven is also present in several endings in Guilty Gear XX, in which one he is noted as the parallel existence of Axl Low.

Roger
Bridget's mechanical and sentient teddy bear, Roger helps Bridget in his fights by punching and cutting up the opponent should they get in his way.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

Sharon
Wife and constant companion of Slayer. While not a vampire, she is immortal and apparently cannot be killed, even to the point where Slayer can completely drain her of blood with no ill effect. She speaks very little, if at all.

Guilty Gear X Guilty Gear X

S-Ko
A vengeful spirit that has possessed Zappa, and is quite possibly the most powerful one occupying his body. Also, she shares many similarities and is most likely a reference to Sadako from The Ring. (S-Ko is an abbreviated form of Sadako).

That Man
(Ano Otoko in the original Japanese)

The creator of the Gears. Little is known of him and his motivations, but he has played key roles in many events over the past 150 years, seemingly immune to aging. Moreover, his intentions seem whole-hearted, often hinting that Gears were created to protect mankind from a future threat.

Timeline & Story

TIMELINE

Most of the timeline comes from Drafting Artworks, with additions made by
myself based on the GGX novels and drama CDs. Years marked with an
asterisk are part of the alternate future time loop created by I-No.

1945
After World War II, the United Nations is founded by many of the nations
of the world in order to preserve a global sense of community.

2010
The potential of magic is realized and magic begins to be studied as a
science. However the name of the person who first revealed the secrets of
magic has been lost.

2014
The "Gear Project", a project dedicated towards the evolution and
strengthening of mankind, begins. However its nature and full purpose are
unknown.

2016
Frederick, the first prototype in the Gear Project, escaped the laboratory
shortly after undergoing the Gear conversion. Along the same time the
rest of the laboratory personnel, starting with "That Man", diesappear -
the Gear Project grinds to a halt. Frederick, now no longer human,
designs a Gear Cell Control Device in order to maintain a human appearance.

2073
That Man completes a "Perfect Gear" archetype, sort of the essence of
Justice, that is subservient to mankind. A certain major country restarts
the Gear Project. Frederick, learning of That Man's plans, begins designing
the Outrage.

2074
That certain major country attempts to use Gears to overwhelm other
countries. However, the Gear who possessed his own free will and incredible
strength, Justice, had been born. As planned by That Man, other Gears
became followers of Justice and turned against mankind. Gears attacked
and destroyed the country of Japan. This led to the formation of the
Holy Order and the beginning of the Holy War.

2099
A 6-year-old Kliff is saved from a Gear attack by Frederick.

2172
A certain "Sol" is recruited by Kliff into the Holy Order. Eventually,
disenchanted by the Order's methods, Sol leaves at an unspecified date,
taking the Order's treasured sword "Fuuenken" with him.

*2173*
At the Battle of Rome, the Holy Order is handed a crushing defeat. Most
significantly, Ky Kiske is killed by a Gear. Just before dying, he entreats
Sol Badguy to take on the leadership position of the Order.

*????*
Johnny is killed in the Holy War. Command of the Jellyfish passes to May.
Justice is killed in the Holy War. Embittered, her daughter, Dizzy, takes
control of the Gears.

*2183*
I-No kills Baldhead, who never regained his sanity, and discovers on his
body the location of the Gear Plant, which he took from some soldiers he
'operated on'. She gives the information to Sol Badguy. Sol leads an all-
out attack on the Gear Plant, but they are no match for Dizzy. Testament
kills Potemkin, and Dizzy destroys the Jellyfish and fights with Sol.
Meanwhile, I-No sneaks into the now-abandoned Gear Plant and meets That
Man, who is being held captive by the Gears. That Man explains to I-No
that he never intended this kind of future when he created Gears.
Intrigued, I-No uses her power to jump through time to return to 2173 and
change history.

2173
I-No arrives back in time at the Battle of Rome and saves the life of Ky
Kiske. She then erases his memory (?) and officially joins That Man.

2175
With the sealing away of Justice, the long Holy War comes to an end. The
Holy Order is disbanded and mankind lives in peace.
(AKA Justice's Story Mode in Guilty Gear XX)

2180
Unease spreads around the world as rumors of a "Justice Revival" spread.
To quell the rumors and prepare for the worst, the countries form the
Second Holy Order and sponsor the Second Holy Order's Fighting Tournament
(AKA the first Guilty Gear game). Justice is destroyed by Sol and other
Gears lose their ability to act.

2181
The Blackard incident (Lightning the Argent) occurs, and a Gear with free
will known as Solaria is created by the company. However, Ky stops their
plan of using her as a command-type Gear, and she lives peacefully as a
human under the auspices of the Police force.
Rumors spread that in A Country a Gear with free will is found.
Panicked countries sponsor another fighting tournament with a bounty of
50,000,000 World Dollars to whoever can eliminate this Gear (AKA Guilty
Gear X). Sol defeats the Gear, Dizzy, but does not kill her. Ky meets
her soon afterwards and similarly does not kill her. Dizzy meets Johnny
and is adopted into the Jellyfish pirates. Dizzy is "officially" dead
and Jam claims the bounty.
A few weeks later a servant of That Man known as I-No begins stirring up
trouble... (AKA Guilty Gear XX).

2182
Events from The Butterfly And Her Gale occur. Chipp Zanuff finally gets
revenge against the man who killed his master, Volf of the Assassins.
Serving as the bodyguard of the President of the A Country (formerly the
US), Erica Bartholomew, Chipp helps to pass an official cutting-of-ties
between A Country and the Assassin Syndicate. A Country also allies with
Zepp.

STORY:

The Guilty Gear series takes place around the year 2180, in a chaotic, mystical future world. In 2010, mankind discovered an unlimited energy source of incredible power, which was fittingly labeled as Magic. Even with the various energy problems solved, wars still continued. With the power of Magic and science, living weapons known as "Gears" were created. These Gears eventually turned on their masters, beginning a century-long global war known as the Crusades where the Sacred Order of Holy Knights (Seikishidan being the Japanese name), fighting for the human race, was able to defeat Justice, the leader of the Gears. Justice having been locked away in a dimensional prison, all other Gears seemingly ceased to function, bringing an end to the Crusades.

Guilty Gear

Five years after the war's end a Gear named Testament began a plan to free Justice. In response to this threat the United Nations began a fighting tournament in order to find fighters who would be able to defeat Testament and Justice. Ultimately, the immortal bounty hunter Sol Badguy brought down Justice again, and an uneasy peace began.

Game Boy Advance version of Guilty Gear X.Guilty Gear X

Less than a year later there were reports of a newly discovered commander Gear. Fearing the start of another war once again, the United Nations held another tournament, offering a prize of 500,000 World Dollars for the destruction of this new Gear.

The Gear in question turned out to be a girl named Dizzy, who, while very powerful, had no desire to wage war or needlessly hurt others. She was defeated but spared by Sol Badguy; soon after, she was found by Ky Kiske, the charismatic police chief of the United Nations and ex-chief of the Sacred Order of Holy Knights. He soon entrusted care of Dizzy to Johnny, the leader of the Jellyfish air pirates, who then welcomed her as one of their own. Meanwhile, the bounty hunter and struggling chef Jam Kuradoberi arranged to take credit for Dizzy's disappearance and collected the reward in order to finance her restaurant.

Guilty Gear XX

In the time following Dizzy's disappearance, the mysterious Post War Administration Bureau began to secretly investigate the Gears and the various fighters of the previous tournaments for their own needs and ambitions. Various powers began to work in the shadows to fight for control of the world, with many leads pointing to the creator of the Gears, a mysterious figure known only as "That Man" ("Ano Otoko" in Japanese). Again, the fighters from before find themselves in events beyond their control, most notably at the manipulative hands of a mysterious villainess by the name of I-No, who is revealed to be a servant of That Man for reasons yet unknown.
